Join Pittsburgh based architects Jennifer Lucchino and Freddie Croce, principals at inter*architecture, and John Barbera of Penner & Associates Architects for a look at some inventive designs on view in the Heinz Architectural Center, then apply your imagination to a 30-minute challenge to create an inhabitable space from some unexpected materials. Scientific theories about color, light, and human perception abounded in the 19th century and were discussed and debated by Impressionist artists. Join Amanda Zehnder, co-curator of Impressionism in a New Light, for an observation-based discussion, and have fun with some color-theory experiments to discover the impact of scientific thinking on Impressionist methods for representing optical experiences, movement, light, and colors.

This installment of Culture Club includes a free preview screening of the latest season of Art21, the award-winning series of film interviews with leading contemporary artists. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., enjoy happy hour and lively gallery conversation about the museum’s painting Prisoner of Love #1 (Second Version) by African American artist Glenn Ligon. At 7:15 enjoy a free public screening of the Art21 episode “History” featuring Ligon. In this episode, artists play with historical events, explore and expose commonly held assumptions about historic “truth,” and create narratives based on personal experiences. Take a fresh look at some familiar works in the permanent collection through the lens of music. Chuck Olson, abstractionist painter and professor of art at St. Francis University and Paolo Schianchi, guitar virtuoso from Parma, Italy, will share their ideas about relationships in visual art and music. Begin and end the event with short performances by Schianchi in front of Whistler’s painting Arrangement in Black: Portrait of Señor Pablo de Sarasate. In between, join in the discussion on a short tour of the galleries that will close on April 30 for reinstallation and will reopen in an all new configuration in September.
