The work of Iwan Baan is key to White Cube, Green Maze: New Art Landscapes, both the exhibition and the catalogue. In the exhibition, each of the six sites for art is documented by six large prints (24 x 36 in.) each. In addition, Seirensho on the Japanese island of Inujima, the Teshima Art Museum, and four “art houses” designed by the architect Kazuyo Sejima for Inujima village are documented by two smaller prints (12 x 18 in.) each.

Baan’s work is a perfect match for the themes of White Cube, Green Maze. Unlike many architectural photographers, he shows context and messy reality. He also allows people to inhabit many of these images from the far-flung places he has visited. Three weeks ago, Iwan, together with Justin McGuirk and Urban-Think Tank, was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale for their presentation of informal habitation of an incomplete high-rise in Caracas, Venezuela.

With bases in Amsterdam, New York, and Beijing, Iwan is constantly on the move, circumnavigating the globe. In communication with many architects and landscape architects for White Cube, Green Maze, we have grown accustomed to the question: where, exactly, is Iwan? For the opening of this exhibition on Friday, September 21, Iwan will be here in Pittsburgh, participating in a discussion about his work in the Carnegie Museum of Art Theatre at 6:30.

Admission is free; all are invited. A reception on the Hall of Sculpture balcony follows the discussion. For this special event and to celebrate the opening of the exhibition, the galleries of the Heinz Architectural Center will be open until 9 pm.
