White Cube, Green Maze: New Art Landscapes opens here in the Heinz Architectural Center on September 21. Right now, crates are en route from places as diverse as Brazil, Mexico, Germany, and Japan with models and drawings for exhibition in our galleries. We’re also looking forward to receiving the first copies of the catalogue, published in collaboration with the University of California Press. It contains a survey of each of the six selected sites—museums that integrate landscape, architecture, and art—as well as photographs by the distinguished Dutch photographer Iwan Baan, the first recipient of the Julius Shulman Photography Award in 2010. The catalogue has been beautifully designed by MGMT. design in Brooklyn.

I’ve written the main essay; in addition there are provocative texts by Brian O’Doherty, who coined the phrase “white cube” in the 1970s, and Marc Treib, landscape expert and emeritus professor at Berkeley. Iwan will be here on September 21, a Friday. He and I will have a discussion—with some stories behind the images used in the exhibition and catalogue—in the Carnegie Museum of Art Theater at 6:30 that evening. Everyone is invited. We hope it will appeal to fans of architecture and photography, as well as those simply intrigued by the many places Iwan has visited for this and other projects.
