SUMMARY:Play Day! at Carnegie Museums and Library in Oakland
DESCRIPTION:Bring your playful streak, and celebrate the Month of the Young Child—a time to recognize the importance of quality early learning experiences for all children—with a fun-filled day of exploration and participatory activities for kids and families inside and outside the Carnegie Museums and Carnegie Library in Oakland! Have some creative fun with the Imagination Playground, a mobile system of blue blocks in a variety of shapes and sizes that will be set up for the day. Be among the first to climb in and on the "Lozziwurm" play structure recently installed among the trees near the main entrance of the museums at Forbes Avenue and S. Craig Street. The Lozziwurm is a colorful, twisting, tubular play structure designed by Swiss artist Yvan Pestalozzi in 1972. Beginning April 27, it will be available for free play during the museum's regular open hours. The Lozziwurm is one of several projects leading up to Carnegie Museum of Art's 2013 Carnegie International exhibition, which opens October 5, 2013. Play Day and the Lozziwurm signal the importance of play as the foundation of thinking, making, and experimentation, a key animating concept of the 2013 Carnegie International. Presented by Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and PAEYC. Kids ages 12 and under are free! Sponsored by TEIS Early Intervention Provider

Among the museum’s distinguished student alumni are artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Raymond Saunders, and Duane Michals. Students in the current Art Connection program develop their artistic skills through gallery sketching, sharing ideas about original artwork in the museum’s galleries, behind-the-scenes sessions with museum staff, and art-making using a variety of materials. This exhibition showcases the work produced by fifth- through ninth-grade students inspired by the creative environment of the museum and its collections. SUMMARY:Bodycast: Artist Suzanne Bocanegra and Actor Frances McDormand Perform at CMOA
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! Bodycast was developed by New York–based visual artist Suzanne Bocanegra and is performed by her and Academy Award-winning actress Frances McDormand. Bocanegra spent time in a body cast from ages 13 to 15 due to scoliosis, an experience that influenced her development as an artist and a woman. Through McDormand, the body cast becomes a vehicle for the discussion of notions of female beauty in the history of art and in life. Part artist talk, part performance, part essay, part live video installation, Bodycast allows Bocanegra, channeled largely through McDormand, to tell a tale of ancient Rome, Texas rose queens, scoliosis, Scottish tartans, the history of how artists are taught to make art, and how all of us are taught to look at it. Its debut performance is at Carnegie Museum of Art on March 1. It will have its New York premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the fall.

Arcangel’s appropriated source materials—ranging from obsolete video games to YouTube clips, and from Hollywood films to underground music—all become fodder for his visual and sensorial modifications. His artistic pursuits live as witty and informative interventions into contemporary culture at a time when we witness its rapid and frequent obsolescence before our eyes. This exhibition is curated by Tina Kukielski.

SUMMARY:Light, Time, and Apparatus: From Pictorialism to 21st-Century Photography
DESCRIPTION:At the turn of the last century, world-renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz was “determined that photography would be accepted as art.” He championed Pictorialism as the process that would achieve this end. Join us for an interesting and wide-ranging discussion in which four contemporary photographers—whose work is informed by the history of photography and its various processes—discuss their thoughts and ideas on photography’s foundational elements: Light, Time, and Apparatus. They’ll offer reflection on these influences in the creation of their work with an emphasis on control of the art during a time of commercial standardization and how this is used to counter the anonymous quality of much of contemporary photography. Presented with F295: Continued Explorations of 21st Century Photography Conference, June 7–10. To register for the full conference, visit www.f295.org/2012. Galleries open until 9 p.m.

SUMMARY:La Belle Époque Cabaret: An Evening in the Bohemian Style
DESCRIPTION:The cafés, cabarets, music halls, and outdoor theaters of 19th-century Paris served as the crossroads for bourgeois and bohemian cultures. The unknown, wealthy, famous, and infamous mingled with artists, writers, musicians, and performers in well-known establishments including Le Chat Noir, Le Mirliton, Le Moulin Rouge, Café Guerbois, and later, La Nouvelle-Athènes. Join us for an evening evoking the environment of a bawdy Parisian cabaret from La Belle Époque. Members of the Pittsburgh Song Collaborative will perform period French songs (accompanied by English subtitles or translated into English) originally sung by Yvette Guilbert, Aristide Bruant, and others. The emcee, played by Rob Frankenberry, will be your guide through musical selections, comedic monologues, and satirical skits. Projected images of artworkwill help emphasize the role that café culture played for Impressionist artists. Featured performers also include Benjamin Binder, piano; Rob Frankenberry, tenor; Olga Perez Flora, mezzo-soprano; and Joseph Gaines, tenor. THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.

SUMMARY:Sounds Series: An Evening with the Psychedelic Furs
DESCRIPTION:The Warhol is pleased to present An Evening with the Psychedelic Furs at the Carnegie Lecture Hall in Oakland. Led by the smoky vocals and poetic lyrics of songwriter and frontman Richard Butler, The Psychedelic Furs emerged out of the late 1970s UK punk scene and made their debut on the U.S. album charts with 1981's Talk Talk Talk. One of the singles from that album, Pretty in Pink, would become a bona-fide teenage anthem after being re-recorded for the platinum-selling soundtrack of the 1986 John Hughes film of the same name. After seven studio albums with other hits such as Love My Way, Heaven, and The Ghost In You, the band took a hiatus through most of the 1990s and resumed touring in 2000. SUMMARY:Duncan Campbell: Artist Lecture and Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The latest installment of the Forum series features filmic “portraits” by Irish artist Duncan Campbell. Each of the films, shown daily over the run of the exhibition, unravels historical narrative by way of one fascinating protagonist—including eminent German bureaucrat Hans Tietmeyer, a key player in Europe’s economic centralization; iconic Irish Republican civil rights activist and MP Bernadette Devlin; and legendary carmaker John DeLorean. Based in the conviction that documentary is only a “peculiar form of fiction,” Campbell’s beautifully composed films bring together archival material and original footage, “authentic” documents and interpretive elements, to present nuanced, imaginative depictions of their subjects. Free; Reception follows.

SUMMARY:Sound Series: Tony Allen's Afrobeat Orchestra, featuring Amp Fiddler
DESCRIPTION: Buy tickets online. For one night only, don’t miss the Pittsburgh debut of legendary drummer Tony Allen and his Afrobeat Orchestra at the opulent Carnegie Music Hall. Considered by Brian Eno to be “perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived,” Allen is most known as the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa 70 in Nigeria from 1968 to 1979. He and Kuti are attributed with creating Afrobeat, the hard-driving, funk-infused, and politically engaged style that has seen a resurgence in recent years, culminating in last year’s Broadway hit musical Fela! Currently on the World Circuit/Nonesuch record label, Allen continues to attract a broad fan base due to varied projects including the Good, the Bad & the Queen collaboration with Damon Albarn (formerly of Blur and currently with Gorillaz). His current touring band features Detroit-based soul-funk musician Amp Fiddler. This event is co-presented by Carnegie Museum of Art, The Andy Warhol Museum, Afrika Yetu, and WYEP 91.3FM

SUMMARY:Experimental Film from the Collection
DESCRIPTION:Film has the capacity to mirror—and manipulate—reality like almost no other medium. As part of the exhibition Ordinary Madness, experience two nights of film drawn from the museum’s extraordinary collection of works from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of these vintage prints haven’t been screened in decades and may not be seen again for years to come. The films in this program highlight the junction-disjunction between art and life, and plumb the divide between reality and its distortion in myth, desire, and individual perception. Some even turn the camera on itself, reflecting on the very process of filmmaking. George Kuchar, Hold Me While I’m Naked (1966, 15 min.) and I an Actress (1976, 8:30 min.) Roger Jacoby, Kunst Life I–III, (1976, 30 min.) Hollis Frampton, Nostalgia (1971, 38 min.) Stephanie Beroes, Valley Fever (1979, 20 min.)
